Jamaica’s capital Kingston has been chosen as one of the top best locations for holiday travel by world renowned travel publication, the Conde Nast Traveller.
In an article which came out on New Year’s Day, Kingston was chosen as one of the areas that visitors could go for an authentic cultural experience. The article also highlighted that with Jamaica celebrating its 60th year of independence it should be an affair to enjoy. “And 2022 poses a prime opportunity for Jamaica, as the year marks the country’s 60th anniversary of Independence. Festivities will be held throughout the island all year and, come August, the Jamaica Carnival (Bacchanal) will flood the streets with feather headdresses, floats and stirring steel pan drums” the article stated.
Kingston has been long touted as a cultural hub with its impact being felt worldwide especially through the impact of reggae music, which found its origins in the capital city. Kingston is also known as the birthplace of several other musical genres to include mento, ska, rocksteady, dub and dancehall and the careers of music legends such as Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh and Jimmy Cliff. Therefore it should be a fun event to see the history of Kingston that has had and continues to have great impact on the global music scene.
The article also made recommendations where travelers can hang during their time just outside of the city where visitors can get their fill of the native culture and people. “Out of town, hidden cultural enclaves cling like limpets to the land. School of Vision – an active commune and guest house celebrating Rastafarian culture – is reached via a short, sharp trek into the Blue Mountains; visit on the Saturday sabbath and you’ll be welcomed by a glorious cacophony of Nyahbinghi music, dancing and drumming” went the article.
Therefore it should prove to be a treat for travellers to descend upon Kingston this year for not just rest and relaxation but also a first had view of the city’s rich history.
